HELP WANTED!
No Experience required
The AEHS Trail committee is seeking volunteers for the annual Great Carrying Place Portage Trail clean-up days. If you own loppers or just a pair of gloves, we want you!
You will have the opportunity to help clear the portage trail of winter debris where Arnold’s army marched 250 years ago this fall, and to discuss the Arnold Expedition with like-minded patriots while you snip away.
We will meet on May 10 at 8 AM on Carry Ponds Road, on the west side of the Kennebec River, north of Pleasant Ridge Plantation. At noon, we will gather at the AEHS cabin on Middle Carry Pond to enjoy the bag lunches you brought from home. See directions below.
If you can’t attend on May 4, don’t worry! Join us on May 14 at 8:30 AM at the junction of Spring Road and Long Falls Dam Road, Carrying Place Town Township. On that day, we will clear the west side of the portage trail and install directional signs along the Great Carrying Place Portage to help guide fellow Arnold enthusiasts through the Maine Wilderness. At noon, we will enjoy lunch by the shore of West Carry Pond, where you can look out over the water and envision Arnold’s men in bateaux crossing the Third Pond on their way to invade Canada. See directions below.
Directions to the May 10 meeting site. Travel via US 201 to Bingham, ME. At the south junction of Maine Highway 16, turn left (west) onto Route 16 and immediately cross the Kennebec River. At the end of the bridge, turn right (north) onto an unnumbered highway. It is 9 miles from where we will meet. This route passes through the hamlet of Pleasant Ridge Plantation. Where the road forks, bear right onto the Carry Ponds Road. At a turnout, there is an AEHS sign on the right side of the road. Go 500 feet further to a larger turnout where we will meet.
