Bertha Colburn recounts her memories of growing up in the Colburn House on the banks of the Kennebec River in Pittston, Maine, during the 1860s. The Colburn House is steeped in history, best known as the home of Major Rueben Colburn, a staunch supporter of the American Revolution, and for his role in the Arnold Expedition. Benedict Arnold and his officers were guests of the Colburns from September 21 through September 23, 1775, while they waited for the completion of the 220 bateaux being built at Colburn’s shipyard. Bertha was the last of her family to own and live in the Colburn House. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery, a short distance from her family’s home.
